THE NERC EXPERIENCEChristopher Adamo, 2006 Perry Plouffe Sholarship RecipientOn an ordinary workday I get up, check my appointment book, and head to the office. Depending on how fortunate I am, I get to see four, maybe five people. If I’m really lucky, one of them is a colleague. What a contrast—and what a treat— it was to attend the 24 th NortheastAMTA Conference in Boxborough, MA as a recipient of the Rhode Island Chapter Perry Plouffe Scholarship Fund. For three full days I had the pleasure of being in a room—no, almost an entire building—full of people who support massage therapy in some way! Each day I had the rare opportunity to be with others just like me, learning new things and having new experiences—all centered around one of my absolute passions in life, massage therapy. And at every turn, there was another colleague or old friend. I am especially grateful to the Perry Plouffe Scholarship Fund for the opportunity to attend the AMTA conference because I was never able to attend one during my 10 years as a massage therapist in California. There were various reasons why I never went, but mainly I did not want to miss work. Thankfully, I am happy to report that my conference experience this March was certainly worth the time away from the office. The classes were informative and supportive. It was great to be in a classroom setting again and work with other experienced therapists learning new techniques, information, and skills. The exhibition hall was full of interesting massage tools and information. All in all, the conference was a memorable and professionally gratifying experience. Can’t wait until next year! (Editor’s note: Seepage 5 for an application to be next year’s recipient!) CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!EDUCATION CO-CHAIRS NEEDED: Want to help choose the continuing education offered locally? Want to meet some of the nation’s best-known massage presenters? If so, this volunteer position is for you! Responsibilities include contacting education presenters and arranging continuing education opportunities in Rhode Island once or twice a year, plus an hour of education at general member meetings twice a year. Contact Cate Chapin at 521-1120 or catechapin@verizon.netDEFINING MEDICAL MASSAGEAMTA Communications and Marketing Department The AMTA National Office received several questions from members about whether or not AMTA is defining the term “medical massage.” AMTA has no plans to do so and is concerned about the potential for such a definition to restrict the practices of massage therapists. AMTA believes discussion is needed among the profession to verify definitions for a variety of massage therapy terms. Empirical evidence hasn’t been provided to support or refute the concept of medical massage as a distinct area of specialization within massage therapy practice. This would be a necessary step if the profession tries to define it. (continued on next page) TEACHER OF THE YEARCeleste MacPhee, Newsletter EditorCongratulations to Dianne Polseno! She was awarded thenationally recognized Jerome Perlinski Teacher of the YearAward for 2006 at the AMTA Council of SchoolsConvention in January. Thanks to all who have supported and advised me over my past term. This spring brings the budding and flowering of our chapter. At our members’ meeting in March several new volunteers stepped up to positions on the board. I am looking forward to that new energy and those fresh ideas creating an exciting future for our chapter. I was thrilled at the presence of so many RI members at the New England AMTA Regional Conference this year. So many stepped up and volunteered their time as needed even if they weren’t attending classes. We had a wonderful RI gathering before the Saturday dinner where we had a chance to laugh, eat and drink good stuff, and relax and network together. Our gathering was so enjoyable that several people from other states dropped by to join in. The enthusiasm and brainstorming that everyone had about next year’s conference was heartening. Over the next year, our chapter is leading the planning for our New England Conference held next spring March 22-25. One place we’ll need volunteers is at the hospitality table where people check-in and get free t-shirts and things! If you want to help, look for updates in the next issues or contact our NERC Representatives Jay and Cate (see sidebar).See you all at the various events planned throughout our year from Sports Massage, to Government Relations’ gatherings to Continuing Educational opportunities and general members meetings! Remember that if you have an idea or a concern call or email one of the board. Enjoy the Spring! WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!We look forward to meeting you at the next members’ meeting in September.
